Treatment

The most important step in treating myoclonus is to first identify and appropriately classify the subtype of the disorder because treatments are, in many patients, related to the specific form of myoclonus. It is essential to treat any underlying conditions, such as metabolic problems or toxin or drug exposures, that may have led to the disorder. In many patients, treatment is not necessary; however, when myoclonus interferes with quality of life and activities of daily living, a number of therapies are available. The mainstay of treatment is with oral medications; however, for some patients, chemodenervation with botulinum toxin injection therapy, drugs that work on immune responses, or surgery may be considered.
