Tardive Dyskinesia - Summary

TD is a neurologic disorder manifested by hyperkinetic movements of primarily the face, jaw, and tongue, but also the limbs and trunk. TD is caused by the use of dopamine-receptor-blocking drugs. Treatment is not universally effective, although early recognition and removal of the offending agent are key factors in the outcome of patients with TD. Even in those patients who have long-standing, apparently irreversible TD, symptoms may slowly subside over time, with younger patients having the best prognosis.
